First edition 1720 The Works of Sir William Temple, by Jonathan Swift in two volumes. William Temple was a statesmen deeply involved with the international events of his day and was a minister in Ireland . Jonathan Swift, ( Gulliver's Travels) was his secretary for the last ten years of Temple's life, but years before Swift became famous in his own right. Besides King William III, Jonathan Swift, and myself having a copy of this book, Thomas Jefferson also had a copy of this book and when he died he willed it to his son in law, the Governor of Virginia.
